About Lantern Festival

Lantern Festival is 15th of the lunar calendar and also symbolizes the end of the Chinese New Year. Besides, these day is the first night that can see the full moon on the sky and also the first lunar months which is called “yuan month” or “night xiao” . So It is called Yuan Xiao Festival in China. 

According to the tradition of China, in a beginning new year, when the bright full moon appear on the sky, there should be thousands of colorful lanterns hung out for people to appreciate. At the same time, people will try to solve the questions on the lanterns and eat “tang yuan”.  “Tang Yuan” is the glutinous rice ball and the shape of the ball is symbolizes family reunion and with eating “tang yuan” may bring the happiness and good luck for the family. This day also give all the families a chance to united in the joyful atmosphere. 

Besides, people will visit a temple to pray and bless their family with a good fortune for the brand new day. Chap Goh Meh also symbolizes the Chinese Valentine’s day. During this day, the young maiden is allowed to go on street and pray in the temple in hopes to find a future match and they will throw the mandarin oranges into lakes to let the suitors to pick up the mandarin oranges and this tradition still remain until now.
