Change Your Life, Save The Earth

by Cheow Tsuey Xin

Recycling is one of the ways to preserve our natural resources and save the earth. Meanwhile, it also becomes a source of income for Lovely Disabled Home. It provides opportunities of jobs for disabled members and as a platform for social workers to join the social services.

Lovely Disabled Home is a non-government organization which was established in 2005. It specialise in care for physical disabilities, mental retardation and spastic children. In 2009, the disabled home set up a Recycling Centre to promote environmental protection and also aims to train the disabled members in workshop. Now, there are 4 disabled members working in the Centre with a little salary and helping by social workers.

Moreover, the disabled home spending around two thousands ringgit in every month and 40 percent of these expenses are supported by the income of recycling. Sometimes, they will collect the used products and sell its in flea market. It is not only to earn money, but also those discarded items can be turned into valuable items. In 2009, the disabled home also conducted a speech about the environmental issues in several local universities.

K. K. Lum, the director of the disabled home said that the cooperation and coordination are very important to promote the environmental protection, especially in between of charity association, society and government. For example, when the charity associations conduct a campaign, it needs cooperation and coordination of public participation as well as the government supporting.

“But, the awareness of environmental protection is low among Malaysian due to the lack of action and propaganda,” he added.

Recycling can help us to build a green-environment in our country. However, many people especially the young generations take recycling as a slogan only. Many of them are addicted to new technology and seldom participate in social activities such as recycling.

We cannot deny that our country has adequate resources compare with undeveloped country. In such country, the people will know that how useful and importance of recyclable products due to the limited of resources. However, Malaysians are not care how valuable of the recyclable items. Sometimes, the products are used only once and then discarded.

On another hand, with the higher awareness of citizens in environmental protection, it will help to drive the country into an advanced country. Therefore, we should inspire the awareness of green-environment to our next generation and provide them a healthy lifestyle.

K. K. Lum hopes that young people can act as volunteers in recycling and comes together conserves our natural resources. The Lovely Disabled Home will hold a “green-environment” spot competition at Puchong in the coming 9th March. The Recycling Centre will go to five fixed stations to collect renewable resources in every fourth week a month.
